Kōki is slimly built, sinewy and, like most in his clan, can appear rather sickly at a glance. He has an unfortunate habit of making himself appear considerably smaller than he is— leading to poor posture and a perpetual slouch. He wears the band bearing his village's symbol on his arm. Always appearing rather sullen and dour, dark bags cling to his eyes, owing to a constant lack of restful slumber.

He’s a sensitive, teary-eyed child at ten summers, crying over a scraped knee while his father pulls him up by the collar. He feels the hot sting of a slap across his face, and chokes back a louder sob as the pain blooms into a bruise. Kurogane men do not cry, Kōki. He feels strong hands press the wooden sword back into his palms, and winces when the wood scrapes against wounded skin— torn from hours of harsh practice. You’ll get no dinner until you land a hit on me. Now, try again.
[break][break]
He’s the black sheep. The disappointment. Kōki feels the elders look upon him with disdain when he fails and fails again, they watch him with dissatisfaction as he abandons the forge to help untangle an injured bird from a tree, shake their heads when he freezes in practice matches out of fear of hurting others. His sensitivity and complete lack of confidence was a weakness, never mind his apparent physical frailty. And so, when the time came for the clan to offer one of their own as host to the Seven Tailed Beast, Kōki was overlooked entirely in favor of the other children.
[break][break]
With pride all but shattered, Kōki’s father pushes him harder than ever before. Training sessions turn into brutal beatings, and the child no longer remembers the sound of his voice when it’s not shouting. Do you have it in you to kill me, Kōki? He remembers his father, delirious with rage, ask him. They’re in the training grounds, wooden swords cast aside, his father had drawn a tanto, inching closer and closer. The boy shakes his head vehemently; he loves his father even still, and there’s a thread of consciousness clinging on to this love as a last hope. But the man makes only a noise of consideration that turns to a grunt of opposition, as if dismissing the importance of familial bonds outright. I wish you were never born.
[break][break]
The thread, pulled taut and straining, finally snaps.
[break][break]
An orchestra of crickets chirp outside the Kurogane Clan home, and an owl hoots somewhere far off in the distance. In the deepest hour of the night, the elders are roused from slumber by panicked shouts. Fearing an attack, they gather in the courtyard, blades drawn, only to find a boy painted with spatters of blood from head to toe. Kōki holds the pieces of his father’s shattered tanto in his blackened hands— having used the clan’s kekkei genkai to defend himself. There’s emptiness in his eyes where once was brightness, hollowed by cruelty.
[break][break]
On that night, his heart is consumed by steel.
[break][break]
But his clan rejoices in this transformation. The weakness having been hammered out of him, Kōki was now a blade as fine as any Kurogane masterwork. Ultimately, he becomes the Seven Tailed Beast’s chosen vessel and, no longer holding back, his natural talent for kenjutsu blossoms violently. Where others would once gladly fight him knowing they would win, they now find every excuse to not face him— knowing most of his opponents wind up within an inch of death.
[break][break]
Kōki’s name, once unknown to most in the village, rocketed to become the topic on everyone’s lips when, upon graduation from Kirigakure’s academy, he slew eight other students with a broken katana for seemingly no particular reason. Most speculate it was a show of strength, while others claim he’s insane. Of the two, the latter is more likely.
[break][break]
Within himself, Kōki struggles terribly with persistent nightmares of the Seven Tails preventing him from restful slumber. The creature’s chakra puts a massive strain on his mind and body, leading to frequent but unpredictable outbursts and possessions. While they do converse with one another, their personalities clash often, and they can’t seem to find much common ground. In the end, Kōki’s appointment to the Seven Swordsmen as the wielder of Samehada (instead of Kubikiribōchō as originally intended) was more a decision made for the good of the village than anything else, as the blade is able to consume the Seven Tails’ chakra when it overflows.
[break][break]
In contrast with his relationship with Chōmei, Kōki’s friendship with Samehada is strong. He speaks to both willingly in meditation, but also verbally voices some of his replies when going about his day. This dark muttering and mumbling he sometimes does with himself has led to few in the village believing him to be “haunted”.
