[googlefont=Roboto] Beady brown eyes and a black snoot stared up through clear blue water. Another dog, here to pilfer his treats from Ranto. Chikomaru was having none of it. Absolutely not. He bared his fierce canine teeth and a coarse growl rolled from his tongue. Then his mouth opened wide and a bold, but immature, bark bellowed. But to his astonishment, the strange dog barked back with equal nerve. This only served to deepen Chikomaru’s fury, and a succession of barks were exchanged. Then came the sound of a plunk and a splash of water on the ninken’s nose. Ripples broke through the image of the other dog that hid beneath the water as a red and white fishing lure bobbed up nearby, attached to a line of thread that led back to a big stick that Ranto was holding. The brief absence of the other dog broke the puppies attention, and he turned back to his friend and looked up at him with a wagging tail. “Good boy, let’s see if we can catch some lunch,” Ranto said. He reached down and in between the space of Chikomaru’s little hat to scratch between his ears. The dog's tongue fell out and he sank down to relax for a moment. The area around them was pristine. A pond the size of a city block, teaming with trout and a plethora of small fish. The pink leaves of cherry blossoms floated across the surface of the water alongside lily pads. One such pad held a curious little green lump of a creature, and it was close enough for Chikomaru to investigate. He sank as low as he could with his forelegs while pushing forward with raised hind legs towards the edge of the water. Despite his stealthiness, the frog opened its eyes wide and leapt into the air, away from Chikomaru. But it had made one fatal mistake— It landed on the ground. Chikomaru burst into action, chasing the frog into the foliage. The amphibian made it into a thick patch of hosta with green and white blooms. The puppy began nudging at the plants but couldn’t find the frog no matter how hard he tried. He ignored Ranto’s calls to return and kept trying to pick up the frog’s scent. But it was another scent that found his nose. A person. Chikomaru’s attention shot up from the shrubs and his eyes began darting around the maples, pines, and cherry blossom trees trying to find the source of the scent.

The sound of his footsteps plush against soft grass and loose dirt is easily muffled by the cool breeze and the accompaniment of rustling leaves belonging to Quercus and cherry blossom trees. His steps are light but languid, gingerly carrying Kōki through just a small patch of the dense wilderness that stretched itself across the Land of Fire. The shadows of sleeplessness cling to his eyes like a dark wreath, and yet his gaze is focused— searching. There’s a lidded, transparent box with just enough intentional gaps cut into its plastic surface to indicate its purpose as a cage cradled in his arm. [break][break] He moves across a small clearing, stopping at its edge to drink in his surroundings. His brows furrow in concentration as he looks for a telltale shadow against the rough texture of Quercus bark. He’d come across many such shadows in this outing, but none were all too pleasing to his passenger; and when he spies another dark spot and approaches it with all the quiet stealth of a cat on the prowl, Chōmei’s voice rings in his head yet again, loud and commanding. [break][break] Not that one. I don’t like that one. [break][break] All the tension in Kōki’s movements dissipate like air released from a balloon. He practically deflates with a sigh, “Maybe if you weren’t so picky we’d have caught more than just one by now.” He gripes, suddenly wondering what it was that possessed him to listen to the tailed beast inside him in the first place. “Besides, it feels wrong to hunt for kabutomushi with you here. Aren’t you technically a kabutomushi? What if you’re related?” A subtle touch of joviality accents Kōki’s every word, hardly noticeable through his perpetual deadpan. [break][break] There’s only one Lucky Seven Chōmei that stands above mere insects! Don’t lump me with them. [break][break] “Just feels wrong, that’s all I’m saying.” Kōki shrugs, “What do you want me to do with them?” He asks, realising he hadn’t probed the tailed beast for a reason as to why it dragged him all the way to the Land of Fire to scour for its native rhinoceros beetles. [break][break] I think they’re cute. You should start a collection. [break][break] “… Right, we’re going home now.” Kōki sighs, ready to give up on what ended up being quite the pointless endeavour. He’s about to push past some foliage and trudge back in the direction from whence he came when Samehada bristles in its place on his back. It’s enough to give the Hidden Mist shinobi pause. An interesting chakra signature in the middle of nowhere? Sudden alertness draws the muscles in his shoulders tight as he quietly inches forward, one hand resting cautiously over the hilt of his tanto. [break][break] It’s when he pushes past a dense patch of maple trees that he finds it: a dog, fully alert— but wearing a kasa hat. The sight is so odd it almost paints an obvious expression of shock on Kōki’s normally dead-faced features. “Good… boy?” He says with no small amount of hesitation; his hand has moved from the tanto by now to hover defensively in front of him as Samehada writhes uncomfortably in its place. The sword doesn’t like dogs— or maybe just not this one. [break][break] It’s a ninken, by its features. Though Kōki can’t help but find it adorable. He remembers a time in his childhood when he could afford to appreciate cute animals until the habit was literally beaten out of him. Slowly and carefully, he lowers to a crouch, an outstretched palm inviting the creature to pick up his scent, before setting the caged beetle on the grassy ground as well. A single, large rhinoceros beetle sits within, almost entirely motionless save for the subtle bobbing of its impressive horn. [break][break] Don’t give it to him, he might eat it! [break][break] “Great. All the more reason to give it to him.”

[googlefont=Roboto] Chikomaru didn’t have to investigate long before his eyes fell on a stranger dark of hair with shadows beneath his eyes. Well socialized and brave, the puppy barked an excited greeting that rang through the air like an alarm bell. His tag wiggled furiously as he started to approach the stranger, stopping for a moment and growling when it saw a strange movement on the bandaged object on their back. The moment of grumpiness faded when the newcomers lowered themselves. Chikomaru marched right up to them, smelled their hand, and then opened his mouth to try to give the hand a small exploratory nibble. Enough to sting, but not enough to break skin. After the playful mouthing, he ran back a bit, stopping after getting out of arm's reach. Another few barks were exchanged, unable to contain his excitement at the chance meeting. Afterwards, the placement of the strange cage brought a sense of intrigue. The beetle that came out was a strange creature, and the pup sank on his forelegs to observe it, scooting ever closer. When his movement started to make the beetle uncomfortable, it began to turn and move away. He barked and sprang forward, chomping down on the bug and feeling a satisfying cronch between his teeth. His mouth opened and closed, exaggerated, like when he ate carrots. It was bitter like a coffee bean. Not very tasty. But he liked the feel of the bug in his mouth. With the end of the spectacle, Ranto’s scent drew near almost as if on queue. The boy approached, with a small trout still dangling from a rod. “Chikomaru!” he called. When he crossed the threshold of line of sight, Chikomaru’s master tensed up and put a tree between himself and the stranger. Partially hiding his body, and so nervous that he let the trout wiggle and hit him on the face. “H-Hello?” Ranto called. The ninken could sense his worry, and so he bounded back towards him and away from the stranger to stand between them. Chikomaru didn’t think they were in any danger, but he wanted his friend to feel safe and know that he would be protected.
